Full entry for Sunridge men’s doubles tourney

- Neale Emslie

The competitive tennis season in Nelson Mandela Bay will get off to an early start when Sunridge Tennis Club hold their annual men’s doubles tournament on January 19.

Due to the event’s popularity, it will take place at the Port Elizabeth Lawn Tennis Club, which has sufficient courts to cater for the entry.

Entries closed on Wednesday, but tournament organiser Ignis McLaren said they were already at capacity, with a total of 40 couples having entered before the deadline.

“Over the years [it has been running for more than 25 years] it has really grown in popularity,” he said, “and it’s gratifying that we have reached the maximum entries.

“It’s probably due to the timing of the tournament, when many players are keen to get going in the new year.”

Play is scheduled to get under way at 7.45am and the players will be divided into three sections, according to strength.

In 2018’s tournament, Conrad Hurter claimed his second straight title when he partnered Victor Watson to victory in the final over Luke Stuart and Josh van Rensburg.

He and Watson will be back to defend their title, but will be up against a qualify field.

The experienced Hurter was also crowned the champion in 2017 when he partnered Merwe Serfontein to victory.
