Venter shines in thumping of Despatch

Riaan Venter scored an unbeaten hundred as SA Home Loans Union thumped SUPERSPAR Despatch by 167 runs in their NMB Premier League club cricket fixture in Park Drive on Saturday.

Venter, who finished on 101 not out, was the backbone of the home team’s innings as they made 255 for five.

His 124-ball innings included nine fours and he received good support from Timo Smuts (39), Shawn Wilke (24) and captain Aveshan Moodaley (34no).

Union’s bowlers were accurate with the ball from the outset as Despatch crumbled to 79 all out.

Fast bowler Morne Smith took four for 23, while Ryno Hamilton and Josh Koen took three wickets apiece.

At Freeplay Park, PECC scored a crushing eight-wicket victory over log-leaders Tavcor Commercial Old Grey.

Skipper Garret Perry took three wickets to help restrict Old Grey to 121, while Daniel Doyle scored 79 not out to see his team home to a bonus point victory.

Motherwell beat Bloemendal by four wickets at Finnis Street, while Jendamark United scored a convincing victory over Mechatroni­c Uitenhage, with Sivuyile Duda scoring 54.

On Sunday, Nigel Brouwers took 6/52 and Bradley Bopp made 47 not out as United beat PECC by four wickets.

Gelvandale were too strong for Uitenhage, beating them by seven wickets.
