New-look Sundays River Mile out to make a splash

- Herald Reporter

Organisers of the 95th Sundays River Mile are confident this years event will be the most memorable with additional incentives and initiatives including a possible R10,000 for a Bay school.

There are two major additions to the 2019 River Mile which will take place along the scenic Sundays River, Zsports Events’ marketing manager Niel Du Preez said.

The first is the honour of being added to the Global Swim Series which is a collection of 150 races in 34 countries worldwide in which over 100,000 swimmers take part.

The other is the opportunity for a school to win a R10,000 cash prize which will be awarded to the school with the most entrants.

The initiative is aimed at attracting more youth to the River Mile and offers a chance for everyone to get involved and better the 18 entries mustered by Collegiate Girls High School last year. “There will be no less than seven events to choose from including four swim disciplines, the Nitro Park Kids Across the River race, an OffRoad Triathlon and a 5km Fun Run,” du Preez said.

He said the festival area will sport a variety of arts and crafts, food vendors and a Bridge Street Brewery Beer Garden.

“There will also be a WiFi zone in the festival area for the first time, thanks to the internet providers Igen who will also be running competitions and giving away prizes.”
