1881 A Boer force of about 200 attacks British forces numbering about 600 at Ingogo, between Newcastle and Volksrust, and is repulsed. The British lose 76 men, while the Boers lose eight. 1884 Zulu King Cetshwayo, pictured, the last king of independent Zululand, dies in Eshowe. 1906 Fourteen Natal policemen ride out to arrest members of Chief Bambatha’s household who had threatened a magistrate the previous day. In a skirmish two policemen are killed. 1988 Natal is placed on flood alert as torrential rains lash the province.
