National Park blazes trail for PE racing fraternity

- Punters’ Pal

The sensational performances of the three-year-old National Park got tongues wagging in South African horse racing.

It is exciting times for the Port Elizabeth racing fraternity because this gelding is starting to win some of the country’s biggest races.

It is not often that you see a PE horse going to the other centres and showing the opposition a thing or two.

This is exactly what National Park did last weekend when he won the R1m Gauteng Guineas in style at Turffontein in Johannesburg.

He also won the Graham Beck Stakes earlier in the season, much to delight of PE racing fans who are enjoying every moment of seeing a Bay horse in action in the big races.

There is already talk that National Park will contest the Vodacom Durban July.

National Park is trained at the Fairview stables by Yvette Bremner, one of the leading trainers in the Eastern Cape.

She has surprised all and sundry with her winning formula of travelling successfully with her charges to compete at other centres – not an easy thing to do.

National Park is owned in partnership by Hedley McGrath and Mark Wright from the Eastern Cape, and Bryn Ressell (schooled in the Eastern Cape) from Cape Town.

Let’s hope they keep racing National Park from the PE stables as it means a lot for racing in the Bay that one of their horses is doing so well.

It proves what our trainers are capable of when working with talented horses.

National Park’s victory will no doubt still be a topic of discussion at Friday’s meeting at Fairview.

The fans won’t have to wait long for the big race of the day – the Breeders Guineas Plate for three-year-old fillies is the second race on the card.

It is disappointing that only five fillies will be contesting this, but luckily there will be no lack of quality.

Klever Kathy, Madame Speaker, March Music and the Cape Town raider Western Angel will make sure of an intriguing battle.

In the first leg of the Place Accumulator, punters can start with a banker as Big Fish stands out as the right one.
