1900 The second British offensive in the AngloBoer War begins with an invasion of the Orange Free State with almost 50,000 men. 1982 A call for a work stoppage in protest against the death in police detention of Dr Neil Aggett is supported by virtually all independen­t black unions. 1988 A Dutch Reformed Church in Africa delegation, led by Dr Nico Smith, has talks with the ANC in Lusaka, Zambia. 1990 ANC leader Nelson Mandela, pictured, is released from Victor Verster Prison after 27 years’ incarcerat­ion.
