Fire destroys St Francis restaurant
The Indigo Moon restaurant in St Francis Bay has been gutted after a fire tore through the building at about 11pm on Monday.
The restaurant is situated in The Port Hole Building in Triton Avenue, in the town’s private port.
Residents said there was a loud explosion shortly before the building started burning.
Police are awaiting a fire investigation report to assist in establishing the cause of the fire.
The Kouga councillor heading the community portfolio, Daniel Benson, said the fire was reported to the Kouga municipality’s fire department at about 11.30pm.
“Firefighting crews from St Francis and Humansdorp responded and found the restaurant, Indigo Moon, in flames.
“The fire was contained to the immediate vicinity.
“Unfortunately, the restaurant was gutted, while an adjacent chocolate shop was extensively damaged ,” Benson said.
“The offices of a fishing company also suffered water damage.”
He said the flames were extinguished by about 1.30am, following which the crews continued with damping and overhaul work.
“Our heartfelt sympathy goes to the affected owners.
“The Kouga fire department will be investigating the cause,” Benson said.
Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart said the findings of the fire investigation would determine whether a case of arson would be opened.
