WIDER OF THE DRIVER

Re ‘Stay wider of the rider’. To Pedal Power Association CEO Robert Vogel, please print the rules of the road for cyclists in The Herald and give each rider a copy as they clearly do not know their own rules. I have on three occasions now had near misses with other cars while trying to avoid hitting cyclists riding abreast on narrow roads and not being able to “stay wider of the rider” as I was coming around a bend before seeing the cyclists. Our roads do not cater for cyclists riding in the middle of the road or abreast.

CENTRAL DECAY

We lived in Central in the 1970s and our boys went to St Augustine’s. After school they would play mock battles on Fort Frederick. Central was a clean place. Properties started to go down as businesses relocated to Newton Park. Mr Denton arrived and bought up everything cheap, then left it to run down. Council too slow. The rest is history.

DIANA ý The continued disregard by SAPS to stamp out crime and the council to enforce its own bylaws should be cause for Central residents to stop paying their taxes.

DON’T BLAME THE REF

So now it is the referee’s fault that the Southern Kings cannot win a match. This is Deon David’s lastditch effort to cover up his dismal coaching record. After 21 matches last year and about a dozen this year, you still don’t have the ability to work out what you and your team are doing wrong. Do a clean up as was done with Chippa United. They might be different games, but once a decent coach was appointed and driftwood players discarded ... Unfortunately, you and your bunch of amateurs will remain losers while you are at the helm.

RECYCLE PLASTICS

I for one am very grateful my Herald is delivered in plastic. It prevents a sodden mess from the rain and dew. Get a plastic bottle and stuff discarded plastics into it. These are used to build houses etc.

MARIE ý Get some 2-litre plastic bottles and make eco bricks and deliver to Pick n Pay. All to good use.

FUEL DISRUPTION

Transnet (TNPA) own the port and the tanker berth. They also own Transnet Rail Freight. Why is fuel then supplied by road and not by rail from East London?

SHOPPERS AND STAFF

I agree with “Marie” and “Not Born Yesterday” about shoppers’ attitudes to store staff. I’ve always found engaging with staff in a cheerful way and cracking jokes, mainly at my expense, a great boost for them and myself. Put yourself in their position. Their job can be tedious and, being human, they can also have a bad day.

GR, WALMER ý I agree with HJ Frahm. Too many cashiers engage in loud conversation with their colleagues and barely acknowledge the customer. It’s sad to see common courtesy has gone out the window in many shops. Please managers, train and correct staff if necessary.

CASTER CAN PAY

Government paying R25m to help Caster! Semenya has made an absolute fortune in athletics. Ridiculous for ASA and the state to waste R25m fighting her case. Typical ANC, ignoring the poorest of the poor and spending taxpayers’ money on someone who can afford to pay her own costs.

TAX COLLECTION

If all the foreign business owners and millionaire pastors pay their taxes, it definitely will help filling the coffers of SARS.

LU ý Mr Mboweni, please tax the trillions from taxis lost over the past 20 years.

AWFUL CONDITIONS

Spare a thought for the poor teachers who have to work in the filth, the smell of TB, finding dead rats in your classroom, dodging bullets every day. But the education department expects us to teach these mostly foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) kids who are abnormal. Nobody should be forced to work under such circumstances.
