● Drop in tourism: No pride in our filthy metropole

-

Our mayor and his ANC regime scratch their heads nonplussed as to why our Nelson Mandela metropole is the only city in SA to reveal an alarming drop in tourism.

Are they so obtuse that they cannot see why? Are they oblivious to the filth we live in? Don’t they cringe when tourists off the boat cruises passing through Port Elizabeth to the Addo Elephant Park see derelict buildings, the rubbish in our streets and townships depicting a city without pride?

The council do not have any respect for their heritage or else our museums would be operational instead of in stages of dereliction.

Tourist attractions such as Bayworld, the Apple Express, the Boardwalk and so on could be thriving centres providing job opportunities and proud advertisements for our city and its people. Instead they are a disgrace.

The council are well advised to, cap in hand, send a task team to Cape Town to learn from them why they are so successful.

But what is far more disturbing is the lack of pride our people have in themselves. We have turned on each other as the spate of murders, robberies, strikes, discontented people remind us daily. Even our council meetings degenerate into fisticuffs and brawls.

And to top it all, our Kings in tandem with our council continue to be losers. Sies! Surely there is no better word to express the shocking thrashing Munster gave them on Saturday.

One can stomach an honourable loss, but when a side allows themselves to be led like sheep to the slaughter it is inexcusable. There was no direction, no strategy, no leadership and especially no spirit.

Are we to look forward to another string of losses in the new season?

What has happened to our pride, or do we, like the miserable ANC regime, just not care anymore?

Will Mr Bobani please tell us why we should be proud of our city and why we should be surprised that we are no more than a transit point and not a tourist destination.

But then he lives in a dream world far from the reality, where he actually considers our city one of the safest cities to live in.

He makes a mockery of the news we read ad nauseum!

Nelson Mandela said: “Pride in our country is a common bond between us all. It is the essence of our new patriotism.” In the city that bears his name, we should hang our heads in shame!

Worthy ANC citizens must cringe at the performance of this once laudable and proud organisation. But if they, too, care about the future of this city, we will do so jointly by voting with our minds instead of our hearts to remove this hopeless lot.

History will consider this coming election a definitive point, one way or another.
