Gelvandale continue quest for maiden Premier League title

NMB Premier League joint logleaders BLG Gelvandale made their intentions clear at the weekend as they continued their bid for a maiden title.

Gelvandale top the log with Tavcor Commercial Old Grey on 57 points but have played three fewer games than their rivals.

Trailing Old Grey on the log going into last week, Gelvandale pulled level by thumping defending champions Mecer Madibaz 1.

That was the students’ second defeat of the season and they will need to keep winning now if they are to defend that title.

But Gelvan are hungry for success. They play the students again on Saturday as Madibaz 1 continue their catch-up programme, having not played in the first half of the season.

This time, Gelvan will be on familiar home territory and will be confident of pulling off a rare double over the students.

Old Grey will look to hang on to first position with victory over SA Home Loans Union at Freeplay Park.

But the visitors pushed Old Grey to a close finish last weekend and will be hoping for a repeat performance.

Madibaz 1 have a doubleheader this weekend and play Jendamark United at Dan Qeqe Stadium on Sunday. Madibaz thrashed United by 10 wickets last Saturday, but the township side may prove to be tougher to beat in their own back yard.
