Winning back the streets, a race at a time

- Mogan Segadavan

A group of veteran athletes from the northern areas are aiming to win back the streets and restore athletics in the area to its former glory.

The group plan to register Atlantics Aces, which was once a household name in the area, with EP Athletics.

In its heyday the club produced the cream of local athletes, including Randall Pillay in the 3,000m steeplechase and Priscilla Jonas, who dominated the middle-distance races.

Many went on to win national colours.

The club also produced several provincial administrators, in disciplines from roadrunning to cross-country.

“Part of our plan is to be a vehicle for track and field and to encourage people to take up walking,” club representative Derrick Hoshe said.

“Last year we partnered with the House of Resurrection Haven in Salsoneville to stage a charity run, which was an outstanding success.

“It brought together former athletes who had not seen each other in decades.

“We mapped out a mass participation programme, starting with the Light Up the Night fun run/walk on Friday.

“Next month we will be taking 120 underprivileged children to the Freedom Run in Motherwell.”

The Night fun run/walk is organised in conjunction with the House of Resurrection Haven Children’s Home.

Entry fee is R20 for adults and R10 for children.

Refreshments will be on sale after the race.
