- Devon Koen koend@tisoblackstar.co.za

Move over Cirque du Soleil and welcome Cirque Spectacular to the big top in a production filled with elements of intrigue and entertainment in this inspired creation.

Brought to life by the talented Robin Williams and Chireen Ferreira, Theodor Herzl High School’s latest production will move you in all the best ways.

Inspired by the worldwide movement towards animalfree circuses, Cirque Spectacular is a tap-your-foot, sing along and awe-inspiring experience for everyone.

In association with Magnetic Storm, Cirque Spectacular is just that – spectacular – with amazing choreography, exceptionally good quality sound and lighting, the production is presented in an actual Big Top tent and performed on an 8m diameter circus ring with the audience seated at tables around the ring.

A brilliant mix of music paired with phenomenal dance sequences and comedic sketches, captures the true essence of this production.

Music from Moulin Rouge, The Greatest Showman, the Queen songbook, Pink, Adam Lambert, Puccini, Charlie Chaplin and John Denver leaves the audience in awe.

Aidan Copeland and Ethan Klibansky’s brilliant portrayal of Abbott and Costello are hilarious and must be commended for bringing to life these two characters.

Never falling behind in the banter and keeping true to their characters, Aidan and Ethan have the comedic timing of pro’s, which could take years to master.

Joseph Mendelowitz and Sukhanye Kaliko’s performances in the Parrot Sketch leaves the audience in stitches.

Pierrot, played by Zukhanye Kaliko, is beyond amazing and his voice sends shivers down the spine.

Ring mistress Sibongiseni Beja’s powerful voice cannot be overlooked as she commands attention.

The dance sequence choreographed by Troy Coffey when Louise Daniel takes to the stage first in a powerful tango and then a fantastic ballet sequence, is truly inspiring and compelling.

Theodor Herzl old girl Kasvia von Memerty guest stars and takes control on the stage – and her zombie clowns, in her powerful rendition of Pink’s

Fun House.

Filled with elements of physical theatre, ballet, modern dance and heaps of good quality musical numbers, Cirque Spectacular is a treat.

Cirque Spectacular runs until Thursday March 14 in the Big Top on the Theodor Herzl High School sports field.
