Prisoner found hanged in cell
A Loerie man, arrested four months ago for murder, is believed to have committed suicide at St Albans Prison.
Jean-Pierre Anderson, 27, was found hanging in his cell in the Medium A section for awaiting-trial prisoners.
His body was found at about 8.30pm on Wednesday by a warder.
Anderson was arrested in December, almost five years after he allegedly stabbed to death an unidentified man in 2013.
He was found hanging from the burglar bars of his window.
A piece of linen was around his neck.
A suicide note addressed to prison authorities and his fam- ily was left inside the cell.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said Anderson was awaiting trial and had been alone.
“No foul play is suspected and an inquest is under way.”
Details around his arrest and the motive for the attack – which happened in Uitenhage Road, opposite Cillie High School, on November 23 2013 – remain unknown.
Police only told of how the man was found after a long trail of blood had been found on the road after the stabbing.
Department of correctional services acting regional commissioner Nozipiwo Dumbela said an internal investigation was under way.
“We want to extend our condolences to the family,” Dumbela said.
