Londt Park see off NMU

- Neale Emslie

Londt Park quelled the challenge of NMU in thrilling fashion to retain the men’s Super League squash title at Londt Park last week.

Going into the final round four points behind the varsity side, the holders won the tie 16-10 to finish just two points ahead of their rivals.

But it could not have been much closer, with NMU winning two of the five ties and three of the matches going down to the wire in a contest which showed the best of the competitive nature in Eastern Province squash.

First, Londt Park No 2 Sean Bailey stared defeat in the face when Warren Bower held match ball at 10-9 in the fifth game of their titanic struggle.

But Bailey dug deep and used all his experience to level the match and then take the game 12-10 in a 3-2 win.

That was followed by another ferocious battle between NMU’s Liam Ford and Warren Watermeyer.

The former looked in control when he led 2-1 after losing the first game, but somehow his opponent found a way back into the match.

Watermeyer eventually gave Londt Park a crucial edge when he took the match in five.

Murray Scheepers and Johan Thiel, in the third five-setter of the evening, brought NMU back into the match, but Rudi van Niekerk controlled the deciding clash against Jason le Roux in a 3-0 win.

In the women’s league, Crusaders made it four titles in a row, beating Londt Park 17-5.
