- By Siyamamkela Peta

DEPARTMENT of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC Xolile Nqatha has urged learners to focus on their studies and not be lured by drugs. He was addressing pupils at Cookhouse Senior Secondary School during the EXCO Back to School Campaign where members of the provincial Exco visit schools in preparation of the academic year. “Stay away from alcohol, drugs, sex and focus on education. This beautiful thing that I see in front of me, these are engineers, doctors, nurses, directors and chief directors”. “Education is an important insurance in your life to be independent so that there’s nobody who can push you around just because they do things for you. I am hoping to come back next year to celebrate the 100% that you are committing to do”. He also urged the learners to work hard and exceed the pass rate of the 2018 academic year. “You are not going to lower the standard set by the class of 2018,” promising that “we are here” for support services. The MEC also adopted the school and ensured that government would continue to support it. The MEC also visited Willowmore Secondary School, Jeffrey’s Bay Comprehensive High School and Humansdorp Secondary School and Msobomvu Primary School. Meanwhile, MEC Nqatha also donated school uniform to 240 children in schools based in Stutterheim in the Amahlathi Local Municipality. The learners come from six schools, Cenyu, Jongile Nompondo, Mlungisi, Nomathemba, Sinethemba and Sikhulule at Mlungisi Location. Part of the MEC’s visit included reviving school gardens for nutrition and as such, each school received a gardening starter pack which included seedlings, fertilizer and other inputs.
