CUT OFFICIALS’ SALARIES

I’ve observed the narrative of politicians that the solution to our socio-economic troubles are, among others, the bloated cabinet. However, having highlighted this, if we think the solution is there, it will mean how biased those are who put these solutions forward without interrogating themselves.

In my view even MPs and senior government officials should contribute by cutting their salaries up to 50% as a sign and symbol of patriotic citizens. It doesn’t assist by pointing finger while four are directing to you. The day politicians promise to campaign for cutting the MPs’ salaries in particular is the day I will take them seriously. REPLIES TO READER COMMENTS

Rev Roy (“Ironman delay proves expensive business”, April 15), next time we host the Ironman, please stay at home!

“Post office site disgusting” (April 16): I agree fully. The Newton Park Post Office has looked like this for years. In fact when I read of the millions to be spent on ministerial homes I immediately thought of this building and many other government public buildings which can only be described as disgusting.

The public works department should visit the UIF office and the traffic department in Humansdorp where people are crammed into tiny rooms waiting for service. The list is endless. No pride in government buildings at all.

In reply to Keith Arnold (“Replies about astro”, April 16), I never said funds should be sourced for schools to instal astros. All we want is an astro in our Uitenhage/Despatch area that we all can utilise so we can compete with PE. And there was a municipal astro in Uitenhage which the municipality did not keep up and which became unplayable some 10 years ago.

A V C, UITENHAGE It’s a great pity that we don’t know the identity of the author of “Ramaphosa can’t alone change ANC” (April 17). In the letter, Putting it straight reads the realpolitik of SA and that of a disintegrating ANC perfectly. We should all open our eyes and fine tune our political senses as he/she has.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE

State of state medical facilities: President Cyril Ramaphosa, when you introduce NHI to the citizens of SA, please lead by example and insist all government employees (including yourself and all parliamentarians) use the state medical facilities. When that happens the ANC will be worth voting for. Actions speak louder than words.

BIG EVENT NOT COVERED

Shame, The Herald managed to ignore by far the biggest event in the metro this past weekend, Wings and Wheels festival at Uitenhage. An all-day event attended by many thousands which included an amazing extreme 4x4 competition, lots of displays and culminating in a concert including Demi-Lee Moore and Kurt Darren.

CLIVE HASSELL The Wings and Wheels event was highlighted with information and a picture in our weekend What’s On Guide on Friday alongside more than 20 listings of other happenings, which means space constraints unfortunately do not always allow for additional coverage of all these activities. – The editor

CONTRACT SOUNDS DUBIOUS

“Contract blunder costs city millions” (April 15): something sounds very fishy. The council rarely meets, often has no quorum, there are inextricable delays and it defers most agenda items. At times it fails to secure government funding and yet it very quickly agreed to settle almost R70m for a very dubious contract that generated very little by way of debt collection. In fact debt grew!

How much longer can the voting public stomach this incompetent mayor and administration who brazenly [allegedly] steal taxpayers’ money.

FREE MARKETEER The contract is always loaded in favour of the man who lends you his pen to sign it! Bet the contract terms were not vetted by the municipality’s legal department. If not, why not and no recourse for failing to do so. Something fishy here.

OVERCHARGED

LUNGISA’S BEEN FOUND GUILTY

How many times can you be found guilty? The ANC has announced that it can’t make a decision on Andile Lungisa while he is appealing against his sentence. It is impossible that three judges and a video recording can be wrong! This is just another instance of one law for the ANC and another for the rest of us.

SUPPORT PATENSIE

Well done and let us all support Patensie in the Kouga area for being nominated town of the year. I am sure that some residents like the Fereirras, Nelsons and Wentzels will surely rejoice.

ATWELL WALSH, PORT ELIZABETH

NO RIGHT TO TALK LIKE THAT

Faith Mazibuko has no right to talk to any human being like I heard on SAfm on Tuesday afternoon. Forget the racism. This is just another example of ANC disgrace. Poor Cyril Ramaphosa! Poor SA!
