Looking out for vulnerable children
The Ubomi Obutsha Centre is a community based non-profit organisation working in the area around Salamntu Street, in Kwazakhele, since 1998.
Many changes have happened over the years and the project has grown from a simple food support programme into a substantial collaboration of resources and volunteers to now also include values and character-based life skills programmes and school support for the children and social cohesion programmes and basic needs support for high-risk families.
The current lockdown has forced us to place all of our programmes on hold, with the exception of food support for our families. We are also taking the opportunity to restructure all of our activities to make them workable in what will, inevitably, be a new way of life when the lockdown is over and we need to carry on in a “Covid-19 World”. Until the lockdown began, we had 1,826 children participating in our programmes of which 462 come from 143 ‘at-risk’ homes, of which 90 homes are significantly dependant on the UOC for food support.
The New Life Centre is a community-based, “on-the-ground” collaboration that combines volunteered time, donated resources, developmental activities and social support systems to directly affect the lives of the vulnerable children in our community.
We work to instil good values and develop balanced, capable characters in our children, support the social, spiritual, cognitive and academic development of children at risk, and responsibly and efficiently distribute donated goods to those in need.
All of these are grounded in a relational Christian ethos.
