Warriors quick Stuurman ready to fire on all cylinders

Warriors paceman Glenton Stuurman will be looking to rekindle a fierce partnership with former South Western Districts teammate Stefan Tait when the pair suit up for the franchise in the 2020/2021 campaign.

The right-arm quick, 27, who joined the Eastern Cape outfit at the back end of the 2018/2019 season, said he was excited by the Warriors attack assembled for the new season.

On the potential partnership with Tait, Stuurman, who was laid off due to injury when Tait arrived on loan last season, said he was looking forward to striking up some mean partnerships with him.

“He brings something different to the side, being a left-arm bowler, which there are not many of in the country.

“Being a left-arm bowler, with a decent amount of pace, it makes it even more exciting to think that we could possibly share the new ball for the Warriors.

“In addition to that, we have the likes of Marco Jansen, another left-arm quick as well as having Basheer Walters, who comes with bags of experience, so I think it’s a very exciting time in the Warriors camp,” Stuurman said.

Moving from SWD to the Eastern Cape in 2018, Stuurman said he had taken the decision to join Eastern Province cricket in a bid to take his cricket forward.

“I think my main reason for moving was that I was not getting as many opportunities on the franchise scene as I would have liked and I felt this was a way of me getting out of my comfort zone, luckily I got the big break and the Warriors noticed me.

“I felt I needed to give it a try to see if I could hold my own at this level,” he said.

Stuurman said he only made his break into the provincial scene in his matric year.

“In my final year of school, I was playing club cricket at the time and then later I went for academy trials before making my semi-professional debut,” Stuurman said.

Giving his thoughts on the Warriors squad for the new season, Stuurman said: “We definitely have some exciting players in our ranks.

“I feel we have managed to cover our bases quite well and the young players in our squad can certainly learn a thing or two from the more experienced players in the side because there is so much knowledge of the game within our squad.”

Stuurman has also represented the SA A side against England, an experience he called a “step in the right direction” for his career.

“It will always be a dream of mine to play for my country one day, and that SA A opportunity gave me a bit of insight into how players at that level approached the game.

“For me, the difference between franchise and provincial cricket was a lot greater.

“On the provincial scene, you can sometimes get away with not being on top of your game, but coming into franchise cricket, I could immediately see the difference, things were done a lot faster and each match was as much a mental battle as it was physically,” he said.
