Don’t keep kids out of school

- R E Saptoe, Port Elizabeth

With reference to the letter under the heading, “No [normal] school in abnormal situation” (The Herald, June 9).

Definitely we are not in an abnormal situation, but rather the reality of protecting our lives against a new strain of coronavirus.

I am not sure if the writer has children or grandchildren in school.

I do not condone the idea of encouraging parents to deny their children education.

Surely pastor Jan Bekkies should know better that as a Christian we put our faith and lives in the hand of God?

I do know some schools are not “Covid” compliant but schooling staff are orientated on social distancing, sanitising, hand washing and temperature control plus all related matters.

My only advice to the department of education is to also provide disposable protective clothing to teachers .

Visors, masks and sanitisers plus disposable PPE should make teachers more at ease.

Learners can come in a new set of attire each day if possible, and sort of abolish school uniforms.

We as parents should be open-minded about the reality of Covid-19 and educate ourselves and our children on safety measures to protect us all.

So many children are playing in the streets unprotected.

It would also be wise for the social activist and the pastor to encourage communities to keep their eyes on the schools to stop the vandalising of our schools.

More children out of school will just create more negativity in society.
