TAX THE TAXIS

Unions and taxi owners! We read every day about what these two groups have to say about what they are demanding as their rights and privileges. Unions are based on communist beliefs, and when and wherever possible cause disruption to normal democratic behaviour. They all speak with authority about things they are not qualified in and even telling medical professionals what they should be doing about Covid-19. How many taxi drivers and owners pay income tax? This industry is ruled by gangsters and as an informal cash business, so can their income be measured and taxed like the rest of us? The shortfall in government revenue would be greatly increased if they collected taxes from the taxi industry and if unions stopped interfering in everything they clearly know nothing about.

HIGHWAY OR LANE?

Boundary Lane is a very narrow and picturesque stretch of road which runs from Buffelsfontein Road to Sardinia Bay Road. This country lane is frequented by many joggers, walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The posted speed limit of 30km/h is ignored by many inconsiderate motorists. Please, Mr Traffic Chief, arrange to install just one more traffic calming hump on the road, about 50m just before Milkwood Road, in line with street light number 1993/31. The hump will then be visible to road users at night.

WHAT’S POTTING?

The shade cloth and the construction signs surrounding the “lake” at the Boardwalk have disappeared. Does that mean that the fancy retail development which was planned is the latest victim of the coronavirus or is it just the result of Sun International’s current cashflow problems? Has the development been cancelled or is this just a temporary delay in construction?

BILLS SINCE 1991

“JS” complains about getting municipal accounts addressed to the previous owner of a property he bought three years ago. The balance owing on the account is now R2,000. I sold a property in 1991, fortunately owned by a close corporation, and am still getting accounts from the municipality! At present the amount shown as owed is just short of R500,000. I have given up trying to sort it out. Shows what a mess their accounting records must be.

LITTER EVERYWHERE

The amount of litter lying around on the pavement, caught up against fences and in the gardens, and bins which are overflowing, are an absolute eyesore and disgusting, to say the least. And this is outside St George’s Hospital on the park side. Where are the litter pickers, the street sweepers and where is the municipality?

OBVIOUS BIAS

I must agree with Wayne. Your political slant has become very obvious and very painful. And tedious. The Herald is suffering from a dearth of news. Is it Covid? Are you only operating with skeleton staff?

MUZZLE ZILLE

If the DA has any hope of clawing back lost support of the electorate in the next election, they need to either dump or muzzle Helen Zille, whose tweets seem to come from the Freedom Front playbook.

WORSHIP WOES

Mr President, if the government is prepared to open liquor stores, taverns, hairdressers, schools and workplaces, what’s so difficult about opening places of worship? Are these scientists not Christians, because all these places where you’ve relaxed restrictions are increasing the number of Covid-19 cases.
