Mammila has work cut out at Chippa

-

Afamiliar face is striding the corridors of Chippa United’s offices after the news that Morgan Mammila returned to the club on Wednesday. Back in the Bay and meaning business, Mammila has already rolled up his sleeves and got stuck into his new role as general manager of football and compliance. It is Mammila’s second stint at the Eastern Cape club, having previously fulfilled the role of CEO in the 2018/2019 season.

That tenure lasted barely four months before he quit the club via a statement on his Twitter account.

But it appears the parties have kissed and made up and the club, notorious for its recycling of coaches, said they are thrilled to have the strong-willed Mammila back for another stay.

Never short on confidence, Mammila arrived in Port Elizabeth last time out saying he was determined to “change the mess that Chippa United are in”.

But the former investigating officer perhaps bit off more than even he could chew and threw in the towel after only four months.

It was hardly enough time to make a difference.

This time, Mammila was a bit more reserved in his arrival statement.

He believes he knows the positives and he says he has identified the negatives.

He says he will base his approach on teamwork from the bottom of the club through to the top.

His first job, when the Absa Premiership resumes, will be to help the new coach and team stave off relegation.

Once again, Chippa find themselves in rough waters just outside the relegation zone and in need of a timely boost of confidence.

There have been a handful of changes at Chippa United in the last week with players being offloaded along with the interim coach, Rulani Mokwena, whose loan contract from Orlando Pirates expired on Tuesday.

Critics have harped on considerably about the necessity for stability.

There is no other professional sporting team in SA that chops and changes its various structures as much as Chippa do.

Hopefully, this time around, Mammila can channel his strong personality, determination and blueprint for the betterment of the club.
