your chirps EXPLAIN WATER SUPPLY ROUTES

With the flooding of the Vaal/Orange rivers, I think the only aid the dams in our region will get is a minor drop in offtake because of use of water from the Fish River that years ago was supposed to feed the Motherwell area. If this still occurs, I don’t know. We are awaiting completion of a system which will help our supply significantly. Perhaps an article could be published in The Herald about our water supply routes to give us an idea of where this precious resource does come from, which should give many a wake-up call. Sadly, all that lovely water spilling down the Gariep/Orange River will be heading for the sea and not our area. One dreams of solar-powered pumps feeding six-metre diameter pipes heading to our dams and farming areas whenever those floods come.

IT DOESN’T ADD UP

According to The Herald (February 17), the Covid VW field hospital cost R100m and treated 2,100 patients over eight months with 331 health workers. Doing the maths, that means each health worker dealt with roughly one patient each month at a cost of R50,000 per patient. While VWSA and the German government must be commended for their financial support and efforts, it has to be questionable whether it was really necessary in view of such low occupancy and high cost. Further, why was the VWSA field hospital so overstaffed when public hospitals were so understaffed? Questions must be asked of the health department.

ONE MALL TOO MANY

I am shocked that the shopping mall at the Boardwalk is going ahead. What about our other struggling malls? Greenacres and Baywest are not running at full capacity and will fare even worse with another mall. And we know that in PE stores tend to close in one mall if they open in another venue. And the Boardwalk stores will need to hike up their prices to afford the rent, so will this mall be built for the tourists who most likely will not even be interested in shopping at the beach? Let’s focus on saving the shopping malls we already have.

MADIBA A TRUE HERO

Well said Justice Malala. The EFF and its members are always in the news for all the wrong reasons. I have never read or heard from Commander Julius anything but revolutionary nonsense and racist abuse. Madiba was a true hero who should be revered and remembered by all races in SA.

TEA FOR MORE THAN TWO

So the ANC’s top six are to meet Jacob Zuma. Who is going to pay for this expanded tea party?. The ANC is short of cash so unless Zuma gives them some of his brown envelopes (or suitcases), the SA taxpayer will again have to pay.

Malcolm Dodds There is enough evidence at the state capture inquiry for the NPA to take action against Jacob Zuma without him having to appear. All the truth will come out in court. Walter

CLEAN KERBS, FIX LEAKS, FILL HOLES

I would like to know when they are going to clean the kerbs in Upper Valley Road? It looks a sight.

Ratepayer Tuesday was the sixth day of raw sewage running down Fettes Road. Phone the municipality every day and no response. Absolute disgrace.

WHO WAS SLEEPING?

Did the almost 29 coloured councillors sleep on the job when braai spots used by their constituency were demolished by the mayor? Did they sleep on the job not knowing about or saying anything when more than 20 posts were advertised in The Herald of February 8, excluding coloureds? Did all this happen under their watch?

ON THE GRAVY TRAIN

Marlon Daniels and Christian Martin, stop making northern areas people your political stepladders. You both served this rotten administration and did nothing while on the gravy train! Go and clean Highfield and Durban roads to show you care. Delivery is what we vote for today, chaps. Be careful.

Junkie Bobo Christian Martin concerns himself with his own constituency exclusively; other groupings are encouraged to do likewise. Michael Levack

A QUESTION OF CULTURE

The coverage of the Chinese New Year on SABC2 news on February 15 makes me wonder where the culture in SA has gone wrong. Do we have a culture here? Don ’ t think it exists. So very sad.

GRAVE ROBBERY

How on earth do you steal R10m from a president and still go to his funeral? Buffalo City crooks, I hope you get the maximum penalty. Nelson Mandela must be rolling in his grave. Disgrace!

STICK WITH DATES

I agree with Unfair of Uitenhage. Why can’t we have our Sassa pensions on the first of every month? lt worked well in the past, now the dates are changed. Why?
