Construction of sports fields — upliftment or wasteful spending?

- RE Saptoe, Port Elizabeth

An amount of R11m has been budgeted and partially spent on a sports field and already there have been “numerous delays on its road to completion”.

At present, the municipality sets a bad example for the community by demolishing municipal braai facilities as if there’s no concern about vandalism.

The R11m can repair so many water leaks, sewerage blockages, replace old water pipes erect more waste transfer sites, the list can goes on.

The Herald has reported so many times on vandalism — on February 4, the headline was “Shameful”, while that of February 9 was “Welcome to nothing”.

The councillors said fulltime security needed to be employed but until today nothing happened.

Schauderville swimming pool was vandalised, the fence, the water pumps and buildings were all stolen, and all the politicians could say was “they are looking for a new venue to rebuild Schauderville pool.

Now what is the reasoning by the council to spend R11m of taxpayers’ money on a sports field that will be carried away brick by brick, including tiles, gates and fences?

Can’t the learned councillors sit around a table not debating positions but strategise to have measures and policies in place to care for and protect municipal infrastructure from vandalism, or do they enjoy wasting taxpayers’ money?

They should also visit the waste transfer site in Helenvale, in Stanford Road, where there’s no order.

How many more years must we sit with poor administration?

Seems the only good thing they can do is to pose for The Herald photographers.
