As if it’s not bad enough our municipality has gone to hell in a handbasket and can’t afford to fix potholes, let alone leaking water pipes (which wastes precious water we can ill afford to), let’s not even bother to mention the upkeep of parks and islands in Cape Road, for example.

Now the municipality is implementing a 30% deduction on electricity purchases for accounts in arrears! While I understand the need to get tough on non-payers, what about someone whose account is due on the 28th of every month (don’t bother to try to change that — I’ve been trying for years) because my money/salary only gets paid in on the last day of every month.

So, by the time I’ve paid my account (in the early hours of the morning as soon as my money is in), my next account is already in print, which means it always reflects an “overdue” amount!

I pay more than is actually due to try to solve the problem, but no, this month I was penalised for being “in arrears” by R15. I will have this problem every month purely because my due date cannot be changed to

the end of the month. I am sure I am not the only person who doesn’t have an extra couple of thousands just lying in the bank, so I’m not alone from what i hear.

Why can’t everybody have the same due date — the end of the month, like most other businesses? A simple system — everybody pays at the end of the month. MLL

EXCESSIVE WAGE BILL

How can Amathole municipality justify a monthly wage bill of R65m? Questions need to be answered. What does the mayor earn relative to the lowest paid employee? From what sources does their income originate? No wonder there is no service delivery. I suppose apartheid is again to blame. None of these municipalities are accountable. Wasteful expenditure and blatant theft is the order of the day.
