The way to go

- Herald Racing Editor

THERE seem to be a couple of banker bets today at the Vaal on the eight-race card, most notably Super Excited in the fourth and Emerald Crest in the sixth.

The former, trained by Paul Matchett, was quoted at 8-10 yesterday while the latter, from Alec Laird’s yard, was at 13-10.

Both these runners come up against small fields and will probably for the basis of most punters’ exotic bets.

The most competitive race on the card is the last, a Classified Stakes over 1 400m where 16 runners are carded to face the starter.

The last thing any punter wants, is to go out in the last leg of the Pick 6.

The logical solution today will be to go as wide as possible here, but that could end up watering down any winnings.

With that said, it seems that one could cut down the number of potential winners to just a handful.

First and foremost is The rose of be char re. This two-year old Vision a ire filly broke her maiden in her penultimate over course and distance and followed up with an impressive post-maiden run at Turffontein on the Inside track, despite being bumped.

Back on “home turf” she will have the benefit of a lot more room to manoeuvre racing down the wide straight with very little weight on her back.

Trattoria is also back at the track where she scored her only career win and could go in again.

Soul Of Wit is fresh off a win and could repeat while Belle Of Belize is way better than her solitary career win from ten runs suggests.

El Romiachi is in great form and completes the handful.

If even numbers are preferred, add Me Time to the list. It’s been 929 days since she recorded her only win so she is more than overdue.
