Entertainment extravaganza at Savoy
The Port Elizabeth Gilbert and Sullivan Society (PEG&S) is celebrating World Theatre Day with open days at the Savoy Theatre, where the magic of theatre and live performance will be shared.
For the third time, the twoday theatre extravaganza will showcase all aspects of theatre through workshops, discussions and demonstrations, culminating in the annual Making an Impact concerts.
PEG&S president Rose Cowpar said new, innovative ways to create opportunities for anyone interested in the world of theatre had been introduced, and she promised to make anyone feel part of the “Savoy family”.
The society has been working towards developing the Savoy Theatre in Perridgevale as a hub for all local theatre practitioners to meet, network, perform, learn and develop new works.
“No-one gets left behind at the Savoy, and World Theatre Day is the perfect time to celebrate what we do alongside the thousands of performers, dancers, technicians and audience members who are part of the family,” Cowpar said.
Celebrated annually on March 27, World Theatre Day was started by the International Theatre Institute in 1962, and brings together artists, organisations and governments from around the world to promote and create awareness of theatre and theatre practitioners.
In the build-up, the society will on Saturday and Sunday host a range of workshops covering dance, acting, performance, auditions, improvisation, modelling and more.
Cowpar will also host an information session for anyone interested in finding out more and getting involved in community theatre.
The weekend will also include the Making an Impact variety concerts on Saturday at 3pm and 7pm, where various dance studios will be putting on performances ranging from ballet to jazz and contemporary, hip-hop and ballroom.
Other performances include the children from the PEG&S Holiday Theatre Project show Music! Movies! Magic! with guest parent and child numbers.
The 2022 National Junior Latin champion dancers, Vernon and Dominique van der Merwe, will also be dancing, and there will be items from the new Friendly City Comedy Club.
Bookings can be done via Webtickets or at Pick n Pay.
