CURFEW WOULD CURB CRIME

With crime spiralling out of control, why don’t we have a curfew? Most crime is committed at night and particularly during load-shedding. During the Covid-19 curfew, crime dropped, as did A&E [accident and emergency hospital] visits. Incidents associated with alcohol abuse also dropped. We are no longer safe in this country, and need some strong deterrents, and strong, brave leadership.

ELECTRICITY TARIFF HIKE

Re the increased electricity tariff, once again we have to pay the price because of fraud, corruption and greed. We, the people, have no say in this country. We are being bled dry while the powers, who receive inflated salaries, do not pay and are living in the lap of luxury. Remember, the wheel turns! Karma’s a b **** h!

BRING BACK BEACHFRONT POOL

Please, Mr Mayor, Retief Odendaal, take a trip down Victoria Drive. We are ashamed that visitors travelling to Schoenmakerskop via Victoria Road have to drive pass the garbage dump on the side of the road. It is a disgrace. Then there is the swamp at Kings Beach, which used to be a kiddies’ pool. Only now it’ sa swamp that does not require any maintenance. Please look at the beachfront through the eyes of visitors and bring back the kiddies’ pool, or replace the swamp with something else that can entertain our children and guests to the city.

PARKING FOR DISABLED

While we appreciate the Metro Police looking after us at the beachfront, parking in the paraplegic parking on Saturday at 9am is really poor.

NAME CHANGES DEBATE

These name changes are nothing more than a blatant hijacking of the real history of the development of towns and cities in SA. At least we now know that the ANC is finally admitting that it did not create the towns and cities we know today. “Development” has never and will never exist in the government’s dictionary. However, area name changes are a more realistic and historically relevant option.

RAG Lots of comments on the name changes, and of course it is important to note that there was not a port here before the English settlers came. But it is interesting that the minister and his namechanging commission named our airport the Dawid Stuurman International Airport — that’ sa good Afrikaans name! And the Sarah Baartman District Municipality — another good Afrikaans name! All in keeping with our mixed-up ancestry.

EFF SHUTDOWN

The EFF’s call for a national shutdown in a bid to terminate load-shedding and force Cyril Ramaphosa to resign was equivalent to cutting off one’s nose because you do not like the smell of your neighbour’s armpit. At the end of the day, the smell will still be there and you will be without a nose! So what’s the point?

What exactly is the EFF’s answer to load-shedding?

Malcolm Dodds Any political party who proudly admits to shutting down a country should be banned or, at the very least, heavily sanctioned. How much did it cost the country? How many billions? The only reason many shops and businesses closed their doors is because they do not trust the government to protect their staff and assets, and who can blame them when the minister of police flies around the country wearing a fancy hat that says “Coffee With a Cop”. If it wasn’t so sad, it would be hilarious. The party must take the word “Economic” out of their name because they clearly do not understand the meaning of the word.

Not Surprised Interesting to see the large number of young people marching in the EFF national shutdown compared to the recent ANC events dominated by folk well past their sell-by-date. Without an economic miracle and inspired leadership, the days of a dominant ANC will be over in 2024.

Davey Crockett Damp squib disaster for this supposed radical wannabe party — the EFF did not bring the country to its knees. We are all tired of this nonsense. We don’t need to be an embarrassment on the world stage.

Hans, Port Alfred

How can it be that a political party with 10% of the total votes is allowed to create havoc and disrupt citizens’ rights? To crown it all, the 25 MPs are paid R3,000-plus a day each with taxpayers’ money. Surely there are responsibilities when they are elected to parliament? Do deductions get made for no work, no pay, and steps taken as in parliament?
