Loerie Sports Facility a golden chance to unearth young talent

- Herald Reporter

The Loerie Sports Facility in Kouga is set to receive a multimillion-rand upgrade, benefiting all sports enthusiasts.

Awarded to LRC Civils by the Kouga municipality, the project of almost R8m began last month and is set to be completed by the end of September.

The work to be carried out will mainly comprise the rebuilding of the clubhouse which was demolished by vandals, leaving only the floor and the foundations.

The new clubhouse will provide support for the combined netball and tennis courts to be erected as part of the upgrade, as well as the covered cricket practice nets which will include new concrete pitches. Both facilities will be fenced in.

The perimeter wall will be repaired and extended, while gates for vehicles and pedestrians with secure access will be installed where needed.

The existing fence will be removed and replaced with a new fence.

Spectator seating will be constructed, as well as parking bays. Kouga mayor Horatio Hendricks said: “We want our young people to play sport on this upgraded field which, once completed, will offer budding sports stars proper infrastructure to nurture their talents and contribute to social development.

“We want them to learn new skills that will help them build a brighter future for themselves and this community.

“We want them to grow up and be respectable adults, to value their friends and families, and to be successful.

“This sports facility can make that happen if we look after it and use it for what it is intended.”

Hendricks appealed to all community members to not let the facility be vandalised or damaged.

“I look forward to watching this facility become a beacon of hope in the Loerie community.”
