Keenly contested encounters in Bay table tennis leagues

- Denzil October

The Nelson Mandela Bay Table Tennis league provided some keenly contested fixtures this week.

With some teams out for the month of Ramadan, the available teams competed in both premier and first league action.

Topspin A and Callies A were involved in a premier league humdinger this week.

There were some extremely tense matches with both teams playing expansive, end-to-end table tennis.

Devin Langford (Callies A) continued his fine form from last week, winning all his matches.

The rivalry between Langford and Topspin A’s captain Prishen Ryan continued in an explosive match with both players leaving it all on the table with tactical game-play.

In the end, Langford came up tops taking it, 11-7, 6-11, 11-7, seeing his team to a close 6-5 victory.

In the second premier league match of the week, Rockets A defeated their B team 9-2.

The scoreline was not a true reflection of the games though and it was an interesting fixture with both teams knowing each other’s games extremely well.

Rockets A’s star player Eric Agobozo was in top form as he won all his matches including a thriller against the ever-vocal Jade Lewis (Rockets B), which Agbozo eventually won 11-4, 9-11, 11-7 to seal the win on the night for Rockets A.

In the first league, Despatch A continued their charge for their maiden title with a 7-4 win over Livvi’s Alumni B in a top-of-the-table clash.

Despatch A’s Julian Horne was in great form as he won all his matches on the night.

The tone was set in the opening game as Horne went up against the unorthodox Claude Lawack (Livvi’s B).

It could have gone either way with Lawack putting up a good fight but in the end Horne held his nerve.
