Juniors set to impress at Victory Raceway

- Brendan Kelly

Victory Raceway on Victoria Drive will be holding the third round of their club championship tomorrow and it once again promises to be a thrilla-minute affair.

The circuit has been a hive of activity in the last two weeks, with the track having been scraped and rolled to ensure that it is in pristine condition for the weekend’s action.

With entries still coming in, the classes that will be catered for are V8 American saloons, 1660s, pinkrods, 2.1 modifieds, hotrods, heavy metals and junior hotrods.

The junior hotrod class continues to grow, which bodes well for the sport as this is where the youngsters get their first real taste of competitive racing in real cars.

Local favourites Reghardt Joubert and Quade de Lange will have their hands full against out-of-town drivers Aidan Erasmus and Divan Meyer from George Motor Club as well as East London hotshot Jordan van der Merwe.

A man that holds many national titles is local hometown hero Pieta Victor.

He has certainly stamped his authority on the American saloon class this season, having put in some dominant performances.

Defending champion Vincent Venter will no doubt be in the hunt, along with the ever improving Eksteen brothers from Joubertina as well as Sydney Vermaak, Andrew Meiring, Juan Roesstorff, Donovan Kotze, Rohan van Vuuren and George visitor Johan Kuyler.

In the bruising 1660 class, Marthinus Muller, the current SA number 2, will join a starstudded field of drivers with Tiaan Oliphant, Melindré

Marais, Chanell van Tonder, Tinus Milne and Kenzo Barnard, as well as visitors JP du Plessis, Hannes Erasmus and Martin Diener from down the Garden Route.

The pinkrod class for ladies is becoming a competitive affair, with Bianca Westraadt being the early championship leader, but with Annuschkeé Landman, Nadia Rautenbach, Marilie Britz, Chanell van Tonder and Uniondale’s Chanteé Elford all in the mix, it promises to be a close affair.

The gates to the circuit open at 1pm for the early birds to get there and claim their favourite spot on the terraced embankments.

Racing is scheduled to get under way at 6pm.

The entry fee is R60 for adults and R30 for children under 12.

Trackside parking is available and costs R50 per vehicle, with braai facilities being available.

Spectators that want trackside parking are urged to get there early to avoid disappointment.
