A whammy, bunt or yardstick might be unfamiliar terms to most, but that is no longer the case for a group of New Brighton pupils who were introduced to hockey through the first of series of coaching clinics brought to the township by the Dan and Rose Qeqe Foundation.

The hockey development initiative in partnership with Collegiate Girls’ High School attracted several township schools to the grounds at Charles Duna Primary this week.

The school’s 40 pupils and a further 40 from the David Vuku and Molefe primary schools participated in the event.

Twelve Collegiate first team players and three players from Madibaz’s Varsity Hockey side were on hand to kick an enthralling day of fun into gear, marshalled by mentor Andrew Beynon.

“It was a fantastic afternoon. Our goal was to introduce field hockey to the community and pupils,” Beynon said.

“I think the children had lots of fun, which is why we play sport. It brings us together, and [Tuesday] was a perfect example.

“Though hockey is in its infancy at the school, we’re thankful to Charles Duna for allowing us to host a clinic [on its fields].

“Hopefully, this is the start of a long and fruitful relationship.”

Charles Duna department head and sports co-ordinator Victor Hulani said the hockey clinic had been an eye-opening event which would positively contribute to the holistic development of the pupils.

“It adds more value to existing sports for the children, giving them a wider choice of what they can play.

“Hockey is likely to be preferred, judging from the excitement and commitment shown during the session.

“I am happy the foundation and Collegiate Girls chose New Brighton for this hockey event and are encouraging and motivating all pupils to sign up for it.”

Dan and Rose Qeqe Foundation director Sinazo Vabaza Tindube said the programme strove to formalise hockey in the targeted township schools.

“Through this collaboration, we [espouse] meaningful participation, skill development from junior to senior levels, and eventually at a competitive level.”
