TOWER OF LIGHT PROJECT

I read last week’s report on the Tower of light to be built for R2bn (“Private sector buy-in to be sought for R2.7bn Tower of Light project”, May 9). Should that not have been published on April 1? What will power it — penlight batteries? They can’t be serious!

Dumbfounded resident Tower of Light at the cost of R2.7bn — is it a joke? You know what? We need power stations. Water. Homes for the homeless. Money to fix and clean our streets. And some clever people want to build a Tower of Light without reliable electricity? Rather clean this filthy city. That will attract visitors. They are looking for a clean, criminalfree city, just like we taxpayers want. With ideas like these, you’ll have to go elsewhere to look for supporters. L McLeod

ESKOM CORRUPTION

With all the wailing and gnashing of teeth over Eskom, the [alleged] role of the elephant in the room, former deputy president David Mabuza, has been conveniently ignored. Davey Crockett

OPERATION CASSINGA

Well said, RAG, re Operation Cassinga in South West Africa (now Namibia) and Operation Savannah in Angola (“SADF query”, Your Chirps, May 11). We fought for SA irrespective of race. The Bull

SA’S RUSSIA STANCE

The ANC has put the backbone of the Eastern Cape economy — the motor industry — on a dead end road. First it was delays over supporting the switch to electric vehicles. Now the overt support of Russia will give US senators the fuel they need to withdraw SA’s AGOA [African Growth and Opportunity Act] privileges. Our OEMs will lose a major export market overnight, not to mention the other exports from the province that benefit from AGOA. Many thousands of jobs will be lost, probably forever. It is time for the voters to wake up and see how this government is destroying their lives and robbing their children of hope. Ed Richardson

TOURIST FIGURES

“SA tourism bounces back with 102% increase in visitors” (May 11) refers. According to Patricia de Lille, Zimbabwe and Mozambique represent the largest numbers of tourists. Could it not be work seekers arriving on tourist visas? Just wondering. Olaf
