Musical theatre lovers in for a treat with ‘Mind My Broadway’

- koend@theherald.co.za Devon Koen

A show like none other and one that sends shivers down the spine while tantalising the senses.

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s latest production, Mind My Broadway, is a visually satisfying epitome of musical theatre.

Directed by Leandi Fontini with vocal direction by Robert Gillmer, Mind My Broadway is an all-engulfing affair that keeps the audience wanting more and more after each song.

Telling the story of musical theatre diva Lola, expertly portrayed by Danyke De Beer, who wants to make a big comeback, Mind My Broadway skilfully intertwines musical theatre classics into a narrative that entertains and amuses.

Stellar casting definitely puts this show on the map for eager theatregoers wanting to enjoy an all-singing, all-dancing classic Broadway-esque event.

While Lola tries to convince the chain-smoking producer, played by the always witty Christopher Cressey, to put her back in the limelight, Lola grabs attention by narrating her background and range through much-loved Broadway musical classics, and some not-so-well-known numbers.

From The Greatest Show Man to Cats and Cabaret, the audience is left wanting more as the show goes on to reach great heights in entertainment.

While the core cast must be commended on their excellent singing and dancing skills, the 30-plus ensemble deserve high praise for their swift costume changes, vocal range, high-energy dance moves and acrobatics.

Choreographed by Carl-Lee Moodley, Mind My Broadway places the audience in the show and encourages you to want to get up and be part of the production.

The sound and lighting crews deserve great applause for adding a welcome and refreshing sparkle to the production.

Hits such as If I were a Rich Man, Memory and Money, Money, Money keep the audience enthralled as vocalists including Roelene Primo, Dirk Viljoen and Nande Mzaidume sooth the soul with the expertly paced vocals.

Jesse Barth and Melissa Leander are brilliant in their rendition of Anything You Can Do and G&S president and production manager Rose Cowpar gives the audience that little extra in more ways than one with her part of Take it Off.

Mind My Broadway runs until May 27 at the Savoy Theatre in Adcockvale.

Tickets are R130 for the 7.30pm nightly performances.
