Beachgoers spring into action to save three from drowning at Sardinia Bay
A group of Gqeberha residents have been hailed as heroes after risking their lives to save three people from the surf at Sardinia Bay.
Former Nelson Mandela Bay triathlete Travis McGrath, accompanied by friends Brett Holmes, Jared Sampson and Jarred Francis, were enjoying a leisurely Sunday afternoon on a sand dune when three people were spotted flailing in the water.
McGrath’s father, Hedley, had been celebrating his daughter-in-law’s birthday when he saw someone waving frantically for help deep in the ocean.
Without hesitation, the four friends and other beachgoers jumped into action.
“We weren’t sure what was happening until we got closer and realised that three people were in danger of drowning,” Hedley said.
“We quickly assessed the situation and calculated [their recovery].
“Being the strongest swimmer, Travis immediately went to the aid of the furthest person, a teenage boy, while Brett approached the closest person first. This person was attempting to assist the person in the middle, the father of the teenager.
“Then Brett, along with the others, joined in to help.
“Together they managed to bring the person in the middle to the shore.
“At that point, Travis and Brett collaborated to bring the teenager safely to the shore.”
Hedley said it was at that moment when a good Samaritan, known only as Kim, not only called the ambulance but was also actively participating at the scene.
“It can be described as nothing short of a miracle, and immense commendation goes out to all the individuals who played a pivotal role in offering their assistance,” Holmes said.
McGrath said he would not hesitate to do the same for anyone else in a similar situation.
“The little boy, wearing a Spider-Man hat, saw his dad as a hero, just like the hero on his head.
“We reassured the child that his dad was indeed a hero.”
Hedley said the rescue effort was a heroic act and served as a reminder that life can be short.
“Incredible teamwork was displayed by both friends and bystanders, with special acknowledgment for Kim, who actively contributed to the collaborative efforts,” Hedley said.
“Most people couldn’t put themselves in that position to save others in the treacherous waters of Sardinia Bay beach.
“A lesson to all not to underestimate the power of the sea,” he said.
