Chippa don’t deserve to be in 13th spot, says co-coach

Chippa United co-coach Thabo September said the Caf break has allowed them to become familiar with the players and also instil their style of play on the team.

The 41-year-old former Matsatsantsa’s DStv Diski Challenge coach joined the Gqeberha side together with co-coach Kwanele Kopo.

The move also saw then head coach Morgan Mammila occupy the technical director role in the club.

Chippa kick off their second leg of the league against Soweto giants Orlando Pirates on February 13 at the Orlando Stadium

(7.30pm).

Chippa are 13th on the log with 18 points from 16 matches.

September, who has been with Chippa for three weeks, says with the quality of players they have, they do not deserve to be in 13th position.

“The Caf break has helped us a lot to understand the culture of the club,” he said.

“Also, to get to know the players and the way that we want to play and try to introduce that to the players.

“We have top-quality players, it is very unfortunate we are in the position we are in.

“I think the players just needed a different mindset.

“So, we worked on that and we are still working on that, but the quality and the talent are here, and we plan to change our position.

“We have good players, a mixture of young and old, and it’s looking good.”

September said their main focus was to get the players to understand who they were and how they would like them to play.

“So probably it was the mental change, and then of course we had to work on the physical part as well, so that we can sustain the 14 games plus the Nedbank Cup that we still have to play.

“We had to work a lot physically and tactically.

“The club was not in a bad position, so we had to tweak a bit in terms of tactics.

“We have great players, individually they make a good setup, but we try and make them better as a team as well,” he said.

“We worked on a lot of things on the aspect of football, in terms of how they should be thinking and believing in themselves.

“They need to get to where they are supposed to be.

“Chippa should not be fighting relegation almost every time, because they have good support from the chairman and management.”
