First ‘The Voice SA’ winner bringing star line-up to Boardwalk

After being propelled into the spotlight when he won season one of The Voice SA, Robin Pieters has been touring the country, but believes Gqeberha is a second home and he will soon be returning to enthral audiences at Boardwalk ICC.

Pieters, who stole the hearts of locals during his previous nine visits to the city, will now bring his production, It’s a Love Thing: Duets GQ, to Boardwalk on February 24.

Pieters, 33, from Cape Town, said the warm reception he previously received from locals had encouraged him to bring the show to the Bay.

The show is an eight-yearold odyssey that began after Pieters won the reality competition.

“It was when I performed three months ago in Gqeberha, when I decided that I wanted to bring this show to Gqeberha as well.

“I looked at the ticket sales and we have about 200 tickets left.

“I am honoured. I know people in Gqeberha wait until the last moment for tickets, but how they have gravitated towards the show is really amazing.

“I was inspired to start the show after I finished The Voice SA in 2016. I knew that I needed something to help keep me alive.

“I knew when the reality shows are done you get a lot of work for the first year and you do not hear of the artists afterwards,” Pieters said.

He said while he initially intended to be a chef, music had chosen him.

“My mother died when I was 17 years old.

“I had never sung solo before, [but] I sang at my mother’s funeral and there was not a dry eye in the auditorium.

“I decided to follow my calling.

“I studied music at the Cape Music Academy for two years and graduated in 2010.

“I never dreamt of being a superstar; I have learnt a lot as a backing singer for the past seven years,” Pieters said.

He said the annual Valentine’s month show had started off small in 2016, with 600 people attending the show every night at the Baxter Theatre for three nights, and it escalated from there.

He has since opened shows for many international singers, including Tevin Campbell and Sybil.

The line-up for this month’s shows also includes Dr Morne Meyer, Craig Lucas, Karin Kortje, Yanga Sobetwa, Andrea Fortuin and Faghrie Isaacs.

“I am about giving people value for their money. They must feel as though they are at an international show.

“I chose Yanga because I think she is one of the [biggest] powerhouses that we have had vocally.

“Faghrie will be performing for the first time in Gqeberha; he is an internet sensation.

“Andrea is a young new talent.

“Karin has performed in Gqeberha before and Craig has never been here, but he’s one of the artists people are excited to see,” Pieters said.
