Support for Chippa questioned

- Gordon Upton

I am of the opinion that my patriotism to our SA sporting teams is well documented in The Herald and Weekend Post.

On many occasions I have taken to task born and bred South Africans living in SA enjoying the freedoms which Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison for, for all South Africans to attain.

My disgust at the traitorous Cannon Maasdorp, ex-president of Eastern Cape Rugby, who blatantly made it known his support for New Zealand rugby to all and sundry, including Saru, having cost us Springbok Tests at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, which affected not only the Eastern Cape rugby public’s enjoyment of watching live Test rugby, but also had a direct effect on the loss of income for the service and tourism industry.

Now we have Chippa Mpengesi, owner of the municipality and ratepayer-funded Chippa United openly declaring his support for Nigeria against SA’s football team, Bafana Bafana in the Afcon semifinal.

Why one asks? Because the Chippa goalkeeper, Nwabali, plays for Nigeria.

Mpengesi was named Mampara of the Week in the Sunday Times on February 11, quite correctly so, for being a traitor and saying he will not be shaken by the backlash from the SA public.

I have often watched ChipIs pa United play at the Nelson Mandela Stadium; never again!

As a ratepayer, my taxes form part of the R13.5m annual funding Chippa United receive; I would like to know what the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality intends to do.

Will the mayor do what he does so well, and find some sort of legal loophole to withdraw the funding?

Will Mr Mcebisi Bass Kamana (MMC: sport, recreation, arts and culture services) rescind the funding?

If NMBM does not rescind the funding, they are complicit in aiding and abetting a traitor in our midst to spend our money.
