Hive Hydrogen seals wind power deal for R105bn Coega green ammonia hub

- Herald Reporter

Hive Hydrogen South Africa recently signed an agreement with Genesis Eco-Energy to implement 372MW of wind power in the Western Cape.

The initiative is aimed at supporting the development of Hive’s Green Ammonia project at Coega.

The implementation means adding the wind project into the Coega Green Ammonia hub as a power generation asset.

This entails finalising the engineering, procurement and construction plan and various project interfaces needed.

There is also a transfer process to bring assets into the project which is part of implementation.

The R105bn green ammonia hub is expected to bring a significant economic boost to the Eastern and Western Cape.

The project was announced at the Presidential Investment Summit in Sandton and awarded strategic integrated project status by the public works ministry in November 2022.

A total of 3,480MW of power will be generated to supply the plant and will bring muchneeded investment to the transmission network.

The project development will also enable other independent power producers in the Beaufort West region to connect their power generation assets to the grid, which will help reduce load-shedding.

Genesis managing director Davin Chown said the Hive Green Ammonia project would incorporate large-scale wind farms to deliver significant benefits to the Eastern Cape, creating large numbers of jobs.

“We are thrilled to be part of delivering this energy solution.”

Hive Energy Africa chief executive Colin Loubser said it had been working with Genesis on two outstanding projects for more than a year.

“We are delighted to have finalised implementation terms with them to ensure a meaningful supply of power is secured for the project.

“We will continue working with Genesis to secure additional power for the Coega Green Ammonia project which, once the first phase is built, will require three further phases to supply power.”
