Grey High, Selborne keep perfect records at Nomads

Grey High and Selborne were the only two unbeaten teams when the curtain came down on the Nomads Hockey Festival after three days of entertaining action at Maritzburg College on Saturday.

Though they emerged with a spotless record, Grey almost lost in their first outing, falling 2-0 behind in their clash with Maritzburg College.

They then scored three unanswered goals after halftime to clinch the victory.

This was followed by an emphatic performance against St John’s, whom they defeated 4-1.

An early morning clash with Hilton on Friday proved to be a real challenge, but they came away with a hard-fought 1-0 win, followed by a decisive 6-0 win over KES in the afternoon.

Grey High were again pushed in their last match against Pretoria Boys’ High, but had enough in the tank to register a 2-1 win.

Under new coach Andrew Beynon, they have swept their opposition in the two most recent festivals, making it 10 wins out of 10.

Working exceptionally hard to stick to their processes, Selborne continued to impress after, like Grey, also going through the Tony Godding Festival the previous weekend unbeaten.

Central to Selborne’s success was their captain, Tre Gilbert, who scored in each match for a tally of six goals, bringing his total to 14 across the two festivals.

At Nomads, Selborne slotted 11 goals and conceded only three as they registered wins over KES, Pretoria Boys’ High, Jeppe, Maritzburg College and St John’s.

Selborne’s next assignment will also be a tough one when they compete in the KES Easter Festival over the coming weekend.
