Warriors seek reset ahead of Lions T20 clash

- Amir Chetty

Remaining grounded and starting afresh will be the objective for the Dafabet Warriors when they travel to Johannesburg to play the Lions in a CSA T20 Challenge clash at the Wanderers today (6pm).

With an unblemished record in the competition so far, Breetzke and his charges have shown impressive form to get the domestic T20 competition under way this season.

Their latest win came in a comfortable 24-run triumph over the North West Dragons in Gqeberha on Sunday, solidifying pole position with six wins from six.

Their tally of 27 points, which includes three bonus points, sees them top the standings, with 10 points separating them and their closest opponents, the Lions, while WP (16 points) and the Dolphins (15) occupy positions three and four on the log.

Riding a wave of momentum, Breetzke said that despite their winning start, their tournament credentials still had a few tests to undergo.

After their trip to the Highveld, the boys in green and black set off to Paarl where they take on Western Province on Sunday before returning home to take on the Titans on April 5.

Breetzke said momentum, though great to have, had to be earned through performances on the field.

“We cannot go into the next game saying we are still unbeaten because at the end of the day, every team in this competition is good and we have got to start again.

“Having said that, being unbeaten [going into the midway point of the competition] has brought a good energy into the changeroom, and it is my job to try to keep the boys grounded and start again,” he said.

Despite showing remarkable consistency across all three facets of the game, Breetzke felt there was still room for improvement, pointing specifically to the need for partnership formation at the top of the order and, in the field, ensuring that they take their chances when these came their way.

“Before every match, we keep speaking about not placing too much focus on the result, but rather how we want to play, so how we have managed to get over the line in our games has been quite pleasing,” he said.

The righthander said they were not firing on all cylinders yet, but he was confident his charges would bring the right mindset to every game.

“Every venue is different and so too are the conditions at that venue.

“So, as a group, we always speak about wanting to play the conditions and dimensions the smartest of any team and just being smart about our business.

“As far as the perfect game, I think that would be great if it did come but we are just focusing on our processes and looking at the next encounter.”*
