An Easter message of hope

- Bruce Woolard, minister of St Davids Congregational Church, Sunridge Park

The Roman soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross at 9am. By 3pm the same day, Jesus died.

Friends came to take His body away. They wrapped Him in burial linens and laid Him in a tomb.

There was no time for the usual burial ritual — the Jewish Sabbath was only a few hours away.

When the Jewish Sabbath was over, early on Sunday morning, devout women took spices and ointment and went to the tomb.

On arriving at the tomb they found that the massive stone had been rolled away.

They entered the tomb and could not find the body.

Two angelic messengers told them that Jesus had risen. They were the first to discover the reality of the resurrection.

The women rushed back to where the disciples were meeting and told them what they experienced about the reality of the resurrection.

The disciples responded with these strange words “and their words seemed as idle tales and we did not believe them” Luke 24:11.

The events that followed changed their disbelief into an unshakeable faith that He was truly alive.

Five-hundred of His followers witnessed His post resurrection reality.

This is a fact of history. A claim worth investigating.

Today, many critics doubt the message of the resurrection, but for those of us who believe the report given by the followers of Christ, demonstrate their faith in the unshakeable truth of God’s inspired word.

This faith in our risen Lord has transformed the lives of millions of people.

1 Corinthians 11:7 says: “If Christ did not rise, our faith is futile and we are still in our sin.” Indeed He is alive!

Happy Easter to all.
