Bay’s Rossouw ready for war against Thysse

- Amir Chetty

Professional Gqeberha boxer Darrin Rossouw expects a bruising encounter when he faces off against Brandon Thysse at the Powerhouse boxing tournament presented by Golden Gloves in Johannesburg this evening.

The bout will be a 10round, junior-middleweight slugfest at Emperors Palace and the fourth match-up on the sixbout fight card sanctioned by Boxing SA in conjunction with the International Boxing Organisation.

Rossouw said the duel was no longer a title fight after Thysse was retired by his corner at the start of the ninth round when reigning national junior-middleweight champion Shervantaigh Koopman successfully defended his crown in September last year.

“I know Brandon is a tough, resilient fighter,” Rossouw said yesterday.

“He has trained hard, and he has double the number of fights that I have, so double the in-ring experience I have.

“He is older and has been in the game long, so I know he is coming to take my head off.

“[However] I am certain I can get the victory.

“I have a game plan that will stop whatever he wants to do and stop him from coming forward and bullying me.

“I am very smart in the ring and will show him that I can overcome him.”

Asked what it would mean for his career to pick up a ninth win against such a formidable opponent, “The Destroyer” said it would go a long way to showing he was ready to take on anyone who was put in front of him.

“Though it is no longer a title fight, it feels like one and should I beat him I will be ranked among the top five in the division on the continent.

“It will elevate my game to a whole new level.

“I feel this is the fight I need to take my boxing to the next level and I am so ready for it.

“The fans will see in this fight that this is where I show another class to Darrin Rossouw,” he said.
