Flurry of violent crime rocks several parts of the city
A metro cop allegedly threatening to shoot people, a man dying in hospital after being shot multiple times, an armed robbery at a pharmacy, and the discovery of a body.
These are just some of the incidents Bay police had to handle over the past 24 hours.
Yesterday evening, chaos erupted as a metro police officer, allegedly wielded a pistol, allegedly threatened to shoot staff at The Barking Spider pub and restaurant in Greenbushes.
Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge confirmed the incident, while the municipality’s political head for safety and security, Stag Mitchell, said the metro cop in question had claimed “he was aiming his cellphone at people”.
He said the officer was offduty and in civilian clothes.
Also yesterday, the body of an unidentified person was found in Booysen Park in an advanced stage of decomposition.
The cause of death was not yet known, Beetge said.
Earlier, a 27-year-old delivery driver was shot in Schauderville and died on arrival at Livingstone Hospital.
The driver, in a cream Toyota Hilux bakkie, had stopped in Jan Hofmeyer Street where his passenger, also 27, went into a shop.
On his return, two armed men approached them, demanding the bakkie’s cargo.
The robbers shot the driver several times and the passenger in his right hand, Beetge said.
The driver sped off and drove to Livingstone Hospital, but died at the hospital.
Beetge said Gelvandale police were investigating.
At 8.10am yesterday, employees at a Charlo pharmacy were locked in an office by two armed robbers, who made off with an undisclosed amount of money.
“No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.”
