Yum, yum for local rum

-

THIS is a rum do. MasterChef South Africa season two finalist, Joani Mitchell, and Zulu Rum founder Clynton Wyness are celebrating world recognition of the locally made rum.

The world-renowned 50 Best International Awards included the KZN brew among the winners in a wide range of categories. These were announced last week at Cipriani in Wall Street, New York.

You can find out more about the local spirit at the inaugural KZN Travel and Adventure Show which will run alongside the East Coast Radio House and Garden Show at the Durban Exhibition Centre, July 8 to 10.

To celebrate the success of the KZN home grown rum, Mitchell concocted a rum and pepperdew chicken dish and a rum and raisin crème brulee using white Zulu Rum.

“I tasted the rum before planning the pairing and chose the dark Impi Rum to create a bold Jamaican/South African feel to the strong flavours of the pepperdew and chicken,” says Mitchell.

“And then as crème brulee is my favourite dessert, I decided to experiment with that as my base and add the blonde white rum and raisins. The result was a creamy brulee with a rich golden glaze which cooked away beautifully.”

Wyness said: “As the rum is made from molasses extracted from sugar cane grown in KZN and the factory is based in Amanzimtoti, it is fitting for us to promote the product at the province’s first travel and adventure show.”

Wyness is also marketing the product abroad and his next port of call is Russia.

The KZN Travel and Adventure Show is hosted by Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, providing a platform for the public to shop for a wide variety of travel and adventure experiences at discounted prices, under one roof. The show will run alongside the House and Garden Show in July, with a two-shows-for-the-price-of-one deal.
