Fashion fundi’s top July tips

Stuck for something to wear to the races? Look no further

-

Two interns from The Independent on Saturday became fashion models for a day this week. Sithembile Mkhwanazi and Phindile Shozi had a “catwalk” experience with Vodacom Durban July Fashion finalist Lauren Judith-Anne Straker, who specialises mostly in bridal lingerie but this time gave tips on how punters could put together an outfit for the big race day by only buying clothes off the peg from local stores.

The Interns tried on different outfits and the designer explained why they worked for the big race.

Navy dress, Truworths – R899 Nude Stilettos – R499 This look is for the dressier lady in evening wear.

However, with a statement fascinator or broad brimmed hat, this look can easily be transformed for daytime.

Long dresses typically work better for evenings, but the navy colour is good for daytime too as it isn’t too fancy.

Wedges or a heeled sandal could alternatively go with this look depending on how comfortable you’d like to be. Usually, I’d opt for something more practical for the Durban July because you’re likely to be on your feet all day.

This is a longer more elegant look for the event. It has a beautiful embellished belt that really adds something special. Ivory Scallop dress, The Space – R840 This is a local designer and is lively for someone who wants to look beautiful but doesn’t want to go over the top with silhouette and style.

The laser-cut fabrics give it a nice finish, and could resemble a deck of cards, like diamonds. It is also a very flattering style. It has stretch fabric in it, making the dress a more comfortable option.

“It’s the kind of dress that you can’t go wrong with”, said Straker.

Burgundy dress with lace detail, Foschini – R699

The beautiful, rich colour, the red and black make a strong combination. The filigree detail goes well with the theme and symbolises a laid-out deck of cards. The dress is formal but still comfortable. This is a style and colour for a strong woman.

Striped dress with lace detail, Edgars – R1 399

A casual and comfortable look, but it is still formal. The bold pattern goes well with the theme; the side lace is very flattering and can be paired with sandals or wedge heels.

The high neck line is great for a very formal day-intonight look.

The colour compliments the dark skin and flatters the neck. The lace appliqué gives the dress an unusual detail.

The dress is better worn without jewellery.

Millie halter maxi dress, Forever New R1 999

Lovely statement white dress. White is going to be the on-trend colour this year. The dress is formal with edgy cut-outs, but it is still casual enough to wear during the day.

The halter effect links well with the idea of the cards being dealt. It is a strong dress that pairs well with accent colour shoes.

Burgundy clutch bag, Foschini – R799

This pairs well with the dress and the gold detail compliments the look.
