The Independent on Saturday

What are you planning to do for your dad tomorrow?

THE INDEPENDENT on Saturday’s interns went to the beachfront to ask people about their plans for Father’s Day tomorrow. Joburg resident Grant Kietzmann, 37, said he didn’t expect anything for Father’s Day, as the Iron Man event would exhaust him to the extent that he wouldn’t be able to celebrate afterwards.

“My wife will only wake me up in the morning for the race,” said Kietzmann.

Siyanda Mbutho, 16, who is gay, said life had not been easy for him, but having a supportive and loving stepfather had been a blessing. He looked up to his stepdad as his hero.

“He’s accepted me for who I am, and I’m planning to make a special lunch for him,” said the Grade 10 pupil from Overport.

Being a wife, mother and daughter is certainly hard work, but not for 28-year-old Cherlaine Mattheysen.

“I bought a present for my husband, and I’m also going to prepare lunch for my dad and take it to him,” said the Morningside resident.

“My children are going to surprise him with a homemade present,” she said.

Ahmed Baccus, 14, who lives on South Beach, is excited to be spending the whole day with his father.

“I will go shopping with him and might cook something for him that he likes.”

But not everyone will have a chance to enjoy Sunday with their fathers. Ranganai Nyoni, a 22-year-old electrical engineering graduate from Zimbabwe, said: “My father lives in Zimbabwe, so I won’t be able to see him to spend a Sunday afternoon with him.

Cassandra Harmse, 27, from Ladysmith, said: “I would take him (my father) fishing if I had a choice.”

Cape Town-based Carl Daniels, 49, said he didn’t want his children to give him anything for Father’s Day.

He believed they should give something to fathers less fortunate than he was.

He added that the best present would be his wife and children serving him breakfast in bed.
