Where will you find 8000 curries and 18000 beers? At the July, of course
THIS year’s Durban July is expected to be even better.
Tickets cost R220 and anyone can walk around the village and enjoy the fashion and fun, but the marquees, both corporate and commercial are where all the parties will happen.
This year there are four double-decker marquees on Greyville Racecorse’s fields. They require plenty of manpower and a full month to assemble but have become the ultimate status symbol at the event.
The marquee village is expected to host 12 000 guests, with 3 500 waiters, bar staff and hostesses to assist with everything they need to have an unforgettable time.
Surrounding the 30 tents will be 3 000m of steel fencing and 1 500m of picket fencing, with 1 000 square metres of flooring covering the field and providing ground for the multiple dance floors, plasma TVs, fully stocked bars and delicious buffets.
Spectators in the doubledeckers will have the luxury of watching all the racing action from their raised marquees above everyone else. Add a glass of bubbly and some scrumptious hors d’oeuvres, and it’s a celebration of Africa’s premier racing event.
For many, “July Fever” cannot only be experienced from the stands, because there are many sit-down venues that provide an array of meals.
From Thursday up to 40 chefs have been preparing 8 000 portions of curry, 2 600 pieces soft drinks, 2 500 bottles of spirits and 600 bottles of wine, as well as 100l of fruit juice and 600l of milk.
Topping the list of favourite meals will be curry and rice. For the chicken dishes, there will be 750kg of chicken, and 150kg of prawns and 300kg of crayfish will also grace the tables.
For those who prefer something a little less fussy, the catering team is providing 5 000 pies and 2 000 hamburgers, as well as 7 000 bread rolls and the necessities for 3 000 cups of tea.
