It’s enthralling, Sweetie Darling

- STAFF REPORTER

WE COULD all do with romance and laughter, so Sweetie Darling, a new comedy by multiple award-winning playwright-director Clinton Marius, is just the ticket.

Previous works he has been involved in include Lollipop Lane, The Fantastical Flea Circus and B!*ch Stole My Doek.

The play stars Durban actor Bongani Mbatha, who made his professional debut in 2000 in The Playhouse Company’s New Stages production, Nomalizo by Bonginkosi Shangase.

Sweetie Darling is a romantic comedy about a young man who goes all out to prove himself. While he sets up a picnic in the park for his sweetheart, he recounts the ups and downs of his journey to happiness.

Appraising the production’s debut performance in January at Durban’s Musho! Festival (where it won the coveted Suliman Family Trust award for the best production), Gisele Turner wrote in her review for Going Places: “Performed with heart and soul by Bongani Mbatha, this tragicomic love story held the audience in thrall. The combination of Marius’s gift for telling an engaging story and Mbatha’s gift for sincere characterisation make Sweetie Darling a winner… filled with ‘ah’ moments that have real emotional content.”

Sweetie Darling is at the Loft Theatre from July 19 to 24.

Tickets are R50 (Tuesday and Wednesday) and R85

(Friday to Sunday). Booking is at Computicket at 0861 915 8000 or at www.computicket.com, or call the Playhouse box office at 031369 9540 (office hours).
