All set for extreme fun at the beach

-

THE Durban Extreme Beach Festival ( DBN X FST) got under way yesterday at the Bay of Plenty beach and continues there today and tomorrow with a variety of extreme sports events and entertainment for people of all ages.

Organiser Steve Jones said his vision was to “grow the event to make it the biggest and best on the Durban beachfront”.

Every effort is being made to establish it as an annual event showcasing all the elements of the Durban beachfront lifestyle, and also featuring surfing and skateboarding along with live music on the Bay lawns.

Surfing takes centre stage today with the second round of the Super Grom contest, which challenges KZN’s best up-andcoming surfers between the ages of 6 and 14 to compete for some great prizes.

The Catch Surf invitation expression session is the ideal warm-up for the signature DBNxTAG surfing event to be contested by mixed teams of five surfers in an “old skool” tag format for a prize purse of R5 000.

One of tomorrow’s highlights is sure to be the Modern Retro Masters Challenge in which the surfer who rides all the boards the best wins a Holmes Brothers surfboard.

Details of how to enter can be obtained by e-mail at holmesbros4@telkomsa.net.

Skateboarders will be pleased to see the return today and tomorrow of the qualifiers for the Kimberley Diamond Cup (KDC), the finals of which are on October 3-8.

Highlights

The top five previously unqualified skaters in each of the 13-and-under Top Grom division and 14-and-over Open division will go forward to the KDC SA Skateboarding Championships in Kimberley.

These qualifiers will be held at the Durban Beachfront Skate Park, which has been upgraded with the addition of various obstacles to make it more exciting.

Those skateboarders who have already entered should check their details on the KDC facebook page or send a request for information by e-mail to Riaan@saskatefed.co.za.

There are also free yoga sessions from 8am to 9am today and tomorrow. Just bring your own mat.

This year’s DBN X FST offers some great live musical entertainment, with the sessions on the Bay lawns – from 2pm-5pm and 7pm-11pm this evening and from 2pm-6pm tomorrow – featuring top artists from around South Africa.

One of the highlights of the three-day beach festival promises to be the “No Pro” BMX Jam, which will see the top BMX athletes competing in a “Jam” format to see who can execute the most technical, stylish and daring tricks on their BMX bikes.

Freestyle BMX riding is more of an art form than a sport, and the rider who creatively makes the best use of the park, performing innovative tricks flawlessly linked together with style and finesse, will be collecting the R2 000 in prize money.

The I Heart Food Market will be operational on both days, with loads of tasty treats and awesome crafts on the lawns.
