SOUTH COAST CHARMER GETS A MAKE-OVER
Reader Cheri Duffy is responsible for the old picture in our weekly then and now feature. She takes up the story:
“My mom and dad, Joan and William Humphris owned the Karridene Hotel during the 1950s while I was at school at Port Natal. My fondest memories are of the 11 desserts offered on the Sunday menu, the fact that some of the rooms had fireplaces and that ladies were allowed into the billiards room (unheard of in those days). Cane spirit was sold for a tickey a tot (2½ cents). The hotel has changed radically since then.”
Well it certainly has as can be seen in the picture on the right, shot this week by Marilyn Bernard. The hotel, which is now owned and run by the Protea Group, has undergone a complete rebuild and refurbishment and only re-opened for business last weekend.
The Independent on Saturday is making a special appeal to readers who have old pictures from KZN, to send them in to us for consideration.
If any of our readers are featured in the old picture, we will do our best to recreate the scene with them in it again.
Readers sending in pictures digitally can address them, with the relevant information, to satmail@inl.co.za. Pictures should preferably be about 1MB in size. If the pictures are in hard copy form, they can be posted, with all the relevant information, to
